Novel determination of radon‐222 velocity in deep subsurface rocks and the feasibility to using radon as an earthquake precursor

Abstract: A novel technique utilizing simultaneous radon monitoring by gamma and alpha detectors to differentiate between the radon climatic driving forces and others has been improved and used for deep subsurface investigation. Detailed long‐term monitoring served as a proxy for studying radon movement within the shallow and deep subsurface, as well as for analyzing the effect of various parameters of the radon transport pattern. The main achievements of the investigation are (a) determination, for the first time, of t… Show more

“…It is very important to collect the gas directly at the point where the fluids enter the borehole. Otherwise the measurements might be affected by external processes like "barometric pumping" inside the open well as described by Zafrir et al (2016).…”

“…Intuitively radon sensor deployed in shelter and specially in boreholes should be less sensitive to climatic effects, but such rule is not unequivocal in the analysed time series (Figure S5). In the literature also the semi-diurnal cycle is encountered in most of the radon series 8,11,14,30,33,34 and mainly correlated to the semi-diurnal atmospheric pressure effects, often referred as barometric tide 35 . The occurrence of a significant effect due to pressure is not surprising.…”

“…The relatioships between radon and the environmental processes concern the volcanic activity, tracing in atmospheric, marine and hydro-geological issues, it is studied as a tracer of tectonic activity and earthquake precursor 1–3 . Indeed, the latter topic encounters a great interest worldwide since clues of tectonic-induced anomalies in radon signals have been suggested in several cases 2,48 . Such anomalies likely arise from the preparatory crust fracturing processes leading to an earthquake: the release of stress within the crust eases the migration of radon from deeper sources.…”

“…Among them, the hydrogeochemical response of earthquake activity has been extensively studied for the last few decades [24]. The hydrogeochemical studies mainly include the monitoring in water level changes, Rn variability in either air, soil, or groundwater, an emanation of soil gases (CO 2 , CH 4 , and He), and other constituents such as Cl − , SO 2− 4 , and HCO − 3 are also used as a forerunner to access the earthquake-induced changes [7,10,11,[24][25][26][27]. However, the use of Rn is globally preferred in comparison with other precursors due to its relatively long half-life and ease of predictability [14].…”
