Novel genotypes of Hepatozoon spp. in small mammals, Brazil

Abstract: Background Small mammals (rodents and marsupials) have been poorly explored for the occurrence of apicomplexan (genus Hepatozoon and genera of the order Piroplasmorida) and Anaplasmataceae agents in Brazil. Thus, this study investigated the occurrence of Hepatozoon spp., Piroplasmorida, and Anaplasmataceae agents in small mammals in seven forest fragments in Brazil. Methods During 2015–2018, small mammals were captured in six forest fragments in th… Show more

“…5 , subclade of Brazilian rodents). This opossum species has been reported to be in syntopy with several rodent species, such as Oecomys mamorae [ 146 ], in which Hepatozoon has been also documented [ 136 , 145 ], a fact that would explain a common haplotype (H17) among rodents and opossums (Fig. 7 , Clade I).…”

“…Rodents are regarded as natural intermediate and potential paratenic hosts of some Hepatozoon species [ 55 , 56 ]. Furthermore, these agents have been identified in diverse rodent species around the world [ 20 ]. In China, Hepatozoon spp.…”
