Novel levan/bentonite/essential oil films: characterization and antimicrobial activity

Abstract: Paenibacillus polymyxa is a microorganism used for the production of carbohydrate biopolymer levan in this work. Film samples were prepared with different contents of levan/bentonite. Film samples were evaluated for thickness, water vapor permeability, tensile strength and elongation properties. The most suitable film composite was chosen to evaluate antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial properties were determined on different microorganisms by adding calendula oil, citronella oil, lemon oil, tamanu oil, peppe… Show more

“…Moreover, microbial levan can be a good source of pure fructose production. The bio-degradable film obtained with levan has a high potential to be used in different areas, especially in food packaging [ 279 ]. In the biomedical sectors, levan has many applications due to its biocompatibility and antibacterial [ 215 , 218 ], anticancer [ 215 , 216 , 217 ], antioxidant [ 218 ], anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory [ 219 ], and prebiotic activities [ 220 ].…”

“…Levan from Paenibacillus polymyxa was used to obtain a biodegradable film, also consisting of bentonite and selected essential oils with antimicrobial properties. The film containing peppermint oil showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans , film containing lemon oil was effective against S. aureus and one with citronella showed activity against E. coli [ 120 ]. This solution has the potential to be used in biodegradable food packaging.…”

“…Antimicrobial effects were evaluated against several microorganisms by the addition of calendula, citronella, lemon, tamanu, and peppermint oil. The greatest antimicrobial activity was obtained against Candida albicans with the levan/bentonite/peppermint oil film (Koşarsoy Ağçeli et al ., 2022).…”
