Novel members of the family Micromonosporaceae, Rugosimonospora acidiphila gen. nov., sp. nov. and Rugosimonospora africana sp. nov.

Abstract: Two novel Gram-positive-staining, acidophilic strains were isolated from soil samples. Both show typical features of filamentous actinomycetes. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strains are members of the family Micromonosporaceae. The two strains contain hydroxydiaminopimelic acid, glycine, alanine and glutamic acid in the peptidoglycan. Fatty acid profiles clearly differentiate the two strains: cyclohexyl C(17 : 0), i-C(16 : 0) and ai-C(17 : 0) are predominant in Delta1(T), while the major… Show more

“…Since the isolation of acidophilic streptomycetes from acidic soil samples by Williams and colleagues (15,16), studies of acidophilic actinomycetes have been focused mainly on the description of novel taxa and on their phylogenetic diversity (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). Acidophilic actinomycetes can be assigned to two groups, namely, a group of moderately acidophilic actinomycetes with an optimal pH of around 6.0 and a group of obligately acidophilic actinomycetes with an optimal pH of no more than 4.0 (23).…”

“…7 A 16S-guided isolation program led to the identification of several new taxa, 7 three of which have been subsequently formally described. [8][9][10] During that program we were also able to isolate hundreds of different strains provisionally designated as 'Alpha' , whose phylogenetic position suggested a new taxon within the Actinobacteria. 7 Independently, phylogenetically related strains have been assigned to the recently described genus Actinoallomurus.…”
