Novel method for the fast measurement of the three‐dimensional range of the eyebox of a VR device

Abstract: In a virtual reality (VR) device, the eyebox is an importance factor that is used to characterize the performance of the VR device. The conventional eyebox measurement method is quite time consuming as measurements must be performed at multiple positions to determine the three‐dimensional range. In this paper, a new measurement method is proposed that entails investigating the trajectories of the light rays extending from a specific position of the virtual image. These light rays form an identifiable brightnes… Show more

“…For the example in this experiment, the diameter of the +5 D lens is approximately 60 mm, but the rays emitted from the sample device are distributed only within 15 mm near the eye position 11,16 . Therefore, the latter determines the value of A and relates to the eyebox of the AR/VR devices.…”

“…In the parallax method, the translating camera should remain inside the eyebox. For the selected sample display, the eyebox is slightly larger than 10 mm 11,16 . For example, for D o = 2.29 m and T = 0.01 m, the angle θ is calculated to be 0.25° from Equation .…”

“…As the optical structures and performance of AR and VR devices are different from those of the typical flat panel display (FPDs), measurement methods for AR and VR devices are different from those for FPD. Hence, various new methods to measure the performance of VR and AR devices have been reported 10–19 . Virtual image distance, which is the distance to the virtual image, is an important factor in characterizing the performance of AR and VR devices.…”
