Novel therapies/hopes for HIV cure in perinatally acquired HIV-positive adolescents

Abstract: Whilst it is premature to anticipate an HIV cure, there is much anticipation that with early ART and additional interventions to perturb the residual viral reservoir, future viral remission off ART might be feasible for PaHIV-AYA. However, given the safety and effectiveness of current ART, a critical debate must evaluate the risks against benefits of any novel intervention, especially amongst adolescents as they become sexually active.

“…In these times of highly active anti‐retroviral therapy (HAART), HIV reduplication can be curbed resulting in a comparable increase in CD4 T‐cell counts (Pasvol et al, 2018). Therefore, survival rates have increased dramatically, and HIV infection has become a chronic, manageable illness, thanks to HAART (Hoxie & June, 2012).…”

“…Therefore, survival rates have increased dramatically, and HIV infection has become a chronic, manageable illness, thanks to HAART (Hoxie & June, 2012). Given the safety and effectiveness of ART, early commencement on treatment and additional interventions to ensure compliance and retention in care have served to alter residual viral reservoirs (Pasvol et al, 2018). For instance, the HIV information technology system (HITS) has been successfully deployed in the DoD health facilities to assist people affected by HIV to access information about prevention strategies and retention in care for those on ART.…”
