Nuclear mass number dependence of inclusive production of ω and ϕ mesons in 12 GeVp+Acollisions

Abstract: The inclusive production of ω and φ mesons is studied in the backward region of the interaction of 12 GeV protons with polyethylene, carbon, and copper targets. The mesons are measured in e + e − decay channels. The production cross sections of the mesons are presented as functions of rapidity y and transverse momentum pT . The nuclear mass number dependences (A dependences) are found to be A 0.710±0.021(stat)±0.037 (syst) for ω mesons and A 0.937±0.049(stat)±0.018(syst) for φ mesons in the region of 0.9 < y … Show more

“…All measured spectra are indeed consistent with a collisional broadening of the 161 The right hand side shows the acceptance for lepton pairs from ω → e + e − decays as a function of the rapidity and transverse momentum of the ω meson. 162 A quite different result has been obtained in the KEK-E325 experiment. Here, protons of 12 GeV were used to produce vector mesons on different targets.…”

“…A systematic study of φ-meson production in p+A collisions at a beam energy of 12 GeV was carried ot by the KEK-PS E325 Collaboration [52,23,53,54]. The slope α of the A αdependence was evaluated using C and Cu targets.…”

“…Some indications of φ-meson modification at normal nuclear densities have been reported from measurements involving photon [18] and proton beams [19,20,21,22,23]. The most remarkable observation in all these measurements is the anomalous A-dependence of φ-meson production.…”

“…In the proton-proton (pp) collisions, the ratio of φ to ω cross sections obtained near φ meson threshold was found to violate the OZI rule by about an order of magnitude [5,6]. Studies of near-threshold φ meson production in pA collisions revealed the target mass dependence of A 0.56 (3) [7], and pointed to the momentum-dependent widening of the φ width in the nuclear medium, from where the φN absorption cross section of about 15-20 mb was estimated [9].…”
