“…In particular, ecdysteroids are biosynthesized in the ovary where Halloween genes encoding ecdysteroidogenic enzymes are expressed ( Niwa and Niwa, 2014 ; Uryu et al, 2015 ; Ameku and Niwa, 2016 ). Also, ecdysteroid signaling in the ovary regulates a wide range of oogenesis processes, including the maintenance of female GSC numbers ( Ables and Drummond-Barbosa, 2010 ; König et al, 2011 ; Morris and Spradling, 2012 ; Ables et al, 2015 ; Ahmed et al, 2020 ; Finger et al, 2021 ). Additionally, 20E acts on both GSCs and the GSC niche cells to regulate the maintenance of female GSC numbers ( Ables and Drummond-Barbosa, 2010 ; König et al, 2011 ).…”

“…From the comparative transcriptome analysis of M. rosenbergii , CYP315a1 was suggested involved in testicular development ( 42 ). Nuclear receptors are a class of proteins found within cells that are responsible for sensing steroid and thyroid hormones and certain other molecules ( 47 , 48 ). Steroid hormones are well known to be responsible for controlling reproduction and development in higher organisms like arthropods ( 46 , 47 ).…”

“…An alternative explanation, for which we have no direct evidence, is that P -element insertions into lncRNA:CR43651 impacts a trait that would be strongly selected in a lab selection experiment such as development time or fecundity. Interestingly, mir-14 is also a negative regulator of Ecdysone Receptor in D. melanogaste r (Varghese and Cohen 2007), which regulates several key physiological processes including pupation and oogenesis (reviewed in Thummel 1995; Schwedes and Carney 2012; Finger et al 2021). If P -element insertions exert their beneficial regulatory effects in non-ovarian tissue, such as in whole larvae, this would explain the absence of a systematic effect on mir14 expression in the ovary (Figure 5A, 5B).…”
