Numerical Assessment of a New Hydro-Pneumatic Suspension System for Motorcycles

Abstract: This work investigates an innovative hydro-pneumatic suspension system that was recently developed for possibly enhancing the performance of wheeled road vehicles, particularly motorcycles. The device exhibits a highly non-linear behavior, and in particular a strongly regressive spring rate, due to its architecture (featuring a hydropneumatic spring and a coil spring arranged in series). Multibody models are implemented and simulated for a preliminary assessment of its actual benefits and/or drawbacks with res… Show more

“…Counterbalance forklift trucks represent an omnipresent and almost essential material handling equipment in industrial applications [1]. They are typically characterized by several distinctive design features, in comparison with most wheeled vehicles [2][3][4]. Firstly, they do not have dedicated suspension systems, e.g., elastic elements and/or shock absorbers connecting the wheel assemblies to the vehicle chassis.…”

“…The wheel alignment inspection method proposed in this study can provide very accurate results and a cost-efficient way for automakers to inspect the wheel alignment of suspension modules. In addition, it can be also applied in the wheel alignment inspection of motorcycles and unconventional automobiles [12,13].…”

“…Suspension design is generally focused on optimization of ride and handling [19,20], however also the energy efficiency target is of great importance, as for the vehicle under study [21,22]. In general, suspensions are classified as dependent, semi-dependent and independent [24][25][26]. In dependent suspensions (like Panhard rods or Watt's linkages [27], commonly employing leaf springs), the wheels of a same axle are connected to each other by a shaft.…”
