Numerical calculation and analysis of filtration performance of an effective novel structural fiber for PM2.5

Abstract: In this study, a novel fiber with slit-crescent-shaped cross-section is proposed to enhance the filtration performance of PM 2.5 in fibrous filtration. The collection efficiency of this fiber is simulated by using a Brownian dynamics simulation technique, and its filtration pressure drop is obtained by numerically solving Navier-Stokes equation with Fluent software. A parametric study is performed to improve the optimum filtration performance of the slit-crescent-shaped fiber via adjusti… Show more

“…The filtration method consists of the separation of particles by their retention in a porous surface when the gas stream passes through it, via chemisorption and physisorption processes [37]. Fibrous filters are the most used [38,39], and the particle capture efficiency and pressure drop depend on the filtration material (fiber size, surface area, etc.) [36,38].…”

In recent decades, thermoplastic polymers made from fossil fuels (e.g., polyethylene) or glass fiber [37,[40][41][42] have been used as materials for the manufacture of air filters.…”
