“…Based on the single tape analysis, it was found that the simulation of the superconducting coil cross section modeling each individual filament making a tape is not practical, so a multiscale approach was used as proposed in [24], [23], [28]. Hence, the magnetic field at the coil boundary is split into a DC component and magnetic ripples using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).…”

“…Outline of Calculation Procedure [5] The HTS tape in the winding of the AC coil operated under AC condition carries the AC transport current in the AC magnetic field produced by the coil itself. The total AC loss in the HTS tape in the winding of the coil depends on the magnetic field and the field angle.…”

“…The total AC loss in the tape is calculated by the numerical model described in the next section. [3], [4] Since the AC self and external magnetic fields electromagnetically couple the superconducting filaments in the tape, it is 1051-8223/$20.00 © 2005 IEEE TABLE I SPECIFICATIONS OF HTS COIL AND TAPE reasonable to model the filamentary region of the tape as a mixture of superconductor and normal metal in this analysis [5]. The transport current flows in the direction of the tape axis and the external AC magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the tape axis.…”

“…It has been shown that the experimental AC loss characteristics of the HTS coils wound by the Bi2223/Ag [4]. From these previous works [3]- [5], we have obtained an idea that the AC loss in the HTS coil can be minimized by optimizing the winding cross section. In [6], an optimizing method of the winding cross section of the HTS coil based on the AC loss minimization has been proposed and the method has been applied to design the cross section of HTS coils which comprise several double pancake coils wound by the Bi2223 tape as a case study to show the effectiveness of AC loss reduction of single coil.…”
