Numerical method for fatigue life of plane bolted joints under thermal load

Abstract: In fatigue test, the fatigue life of metal components is affected by many factors, such as test temperature, stress ratio and loading frequency. In order to study the influence of temperature on fatigue life of bolted joints, thermal stress and fast coefficient are introduced. A numerical method of fatigue crack initiation life is proposed based on Manson-Coffin strain fatigue formula. The crack initiation life of 2024 aluminum alloy at different temperatures can be obtained by this method, which provides a th… Show more

“…For the cylindrical vessel, due to the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid, hoop stress shown in Figure 3 will be generated on the surface of the wall of the tank. Because of the effect of hoop stress, the strength of the tank wall will gradually decrease and produce cracks, leading to fatigue failure of vessel [29,30]. Additional bending stress will be produced under the action of wind, and machining residual stress will be produced in the metal due to machining deformation.…”

“…3 Fatigue failure is one of the main causes of failure in engineering and mechanical systems. 4 Under cyclic loading, if the component reaches or exceeds the material fatigue limit this will results in fatigue failure. 5 The number of cycles of a material or part in the event of damage is the life of the material or part.…”

“…Many scholars and researchers have modified the model based on above all these factors, and propose more prediction methods suitable for material properties and working environment [17,18]. More and more scholars analyze the fatigue life by establishing numerical models [19][20][21][22][23]. Based on the fatigue research results and experience of metal materials, many scholars have carried out fatigue life analysis of metal matrix composites [24,25].…”
