Numerical Model on the Dynamic Behavior of a Prototype Kaplan Turbine Runner

Abstract: Experimental and numerical investigations of the modal behavior of a prototype Kaplan turbine runner in air have been conducted in this paper. The widely used roving accelerometer method was used in the experimental modal analysis. A systematic approach from a single blade model to the whole runner has been used in the simulation to get a thorough understanding. The experimental results show that all the detected modes concentrate their displacements on the impacted blade. The numerical results show that the m… Show more

“…Cavitation performance is one of the key indicators to evaluate the overall performance of turbine units. Problems caused by cavitation, such as degradation of hydraulic performance, cavitation wear of overcurrent components, and vibration intensification, have been becoming major problems in unit operation [1]. In the Kaplan turbine, the leakage flow and vortex flow in the runner clearance region are very complicated because of the influence of the double coordination of the guide vane and blade, and the clearance cavitation forms are various [2].…”

“…For the study of the dynamic response of Kaplan runners, the numerical simulation of the Kaplan turbine is often built and just a few mode global mode shapes are described [18][19][20][21][22]. According to the author's knowledge, no general description of the mode shapes of a Kaplan runner exist.…”

“…Looking at the literature, a lot of authors have paid attention to the modal behavior of Francis and Pump turbines [1]- [11], but very few publications are devoted to Kaplan turbines. Some numerical studies for real prototype in [12] and experimental studies for a single blade in laboratory tests are presented in [13] for a real prototype. In this paper, a complete modal analysis of the runner of a real Kaplan turbine in air was done.…”
