Numerical Simulation of Failure Behavior of Granular Debris Flows Based on Flume Model Tests

Abstract: In this study, the failure behaviors of debris flows were studied by flume model tests with artificial rainfall and numerical simulations (PFC3D). Model tests revealed that grain sizes distribution had profound effects on failure mode, and the failure in slope of medium sand started with cracks at crest and took the form of retrogressive toe sliding failure. With the increase of fine particles in soil, the failure mode of the slopes changed to fluidized flow. The discrete element method PFC3D can overcome the … Show more

“…As a numerical software based on the DEM method, the PFC3D introduced in this study has obvious advantages in modeling extremely large deformation behaviors of geo-material. Therefore, it has been widely applied in the simulation of geological disaster propagation, such as flow-like landslides [53,57], rock avalanches [63,64], and debris flows [41,65] with both dry and saturated source materials. The validity and reliability of the PFC models have been extensively verified.…”

“…In simulations, their method effectively captured the micromechanism of seepage through the soil. Similar applications of the CFD-DEM coupling method have obtained favorable results in other soil seepage and liquefaction studies [23][24][25][26][27]. Recently, Jiang and Zhang [28] and Khalili and Mahboubi [29] embedded discrete CFD-DEM control equations into the commercial software PFC 2D .…”

“…For example, discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) and discrete element method (DEM) have been widely applied to simulate the motion process of debris flows [23][24][25][26]. Particle flow code (PFC) has been often used for the runout behavior simulation of catastrophic debris flows [27]. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is also an effective meshfree method which has been proved to be applicable for kinetic characteristics analysis of debris flows [28,29].…”
