Numerical simulations of NBI fast ion loss with RMPs on the EAST tokamak

Abstract: Fast ion losses in the presence of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) on the EAST tokamak have been simulated by using the Monte Carlo orbit-following code GYCAVA (Xu et al 2019 Comput. Phys. Comm. 244 40). Fast ions produced by the co-current tangential neutral beam injection (NBI) were considered. The initial distribution of NBI fast ions was numerically computed by the TGCO code and the n = 1 vacuum and response RMP fields were numerically computed by the MHD code MARS-F (Liu et al 2000 Phys. Plasmas 7 … Show more

“…The first step is to use a guiding center orbit simulation code (without relativistic effect) [10] to check the correctness of RGCO. Take deuterium with energy of 10 keV as a test particle (the relativistic effect can be neglected), calculate the motion orbit of the test particle in the EAST tokamak configuration with RGCO and the test code, respectively.…”

“…EAST is equipped with RMP coils which are designed for the control of edge localized modes (ELMs) 9,10 . This coils turn out to also have effects on the transport of neutral beam fast ions [11][12][13][14][15] . The effects of RMPs on fast ion transport and loss have been extensively investigated on AUG [16][17][18] , KSTAR 19 , DIII-D 20,21 , and MAST 22 tokamaks.…”

“…TGCO has been used as a NBI module in Ref. 11,14,28 . The guiding-center drift model, edge loss model, and fast ion collision model adopted in this work are well known, and the details of these models are provided in the Appendix.…”

“…The purpose of the present work in the context of numerous complex numerical studies of fast particle transport in tokamak plasmas [20][21][22][23][24][25] has to be clarified. Such studies use accurate theoretical descriptions, usually gyrokinetic, which are fed with detailed depictions of the experiments.…”
