Numerical study on the effect of geometry on mechanical behavior of triply periodic minimal surfaces

Abstract: Metallic cellular structures with triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) is a great approach to enhance multifunctionality for several engineering disciplines. In the present study, we aimed to generate metal-based Neovious, Schoen I-WP and Schwarz Primitive structures, leveraging on TPMS based design methods. Neovious, Schoen I-WP and Schwarz Primitive structures are mathematically formulated. Geometric factors like wall thickness, number of cells and the length of unit cell can affect the mechanical respons… Show more

“…In addition to truss- and plate-based lattices, shell-based lattices consisting of periodic and nonintersecting smooth surfaces have also emerged in recent years ( 24 32 ). Most studies on the shell architecture have focused on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs; common examples include Schwarz P, Schwarz D, and gyroid surfaces) ( 33 , 34 ), which have a minimized surface area within a given boundary and zero mean curvature at each point.…”

“…Ti-6Al-4V lattices with Schwarz P, Neovius, and I-WP topologies have been fabricated through selective laser melting. These lattices have shell thicknesses of 300 to 500 μm, relative densities of 7.5 to 22.3%, and compressive strengths of 10.0 to 73.1 MPa ( 30 ). Recent finite element (FE) simulations showed the variations of various elastic and plastic properties (such as elastic constants, Zener ratio, yield strengths, and yield surfaces under different loading) of I-WP lattice with the relative density ( 31 ).…”

“…One solution can be to fabricate a triple periodic minimal surface (TPMS) by improving the architectural design through ceramic materials to withstand mechanical loads and significantly increase the permeability of body fluids. The metal porous TPMS can be easily fabricated and are well known for BTE [46]. However, on the contrary, there is very limited progress and development of TPMS bioceramics surface, although there is a recent study existing in the literature.…”

“…One of the solutions is the development of a triple periodic minimal surface (TPMS) through an architectural design that would allow mechanical loads inserted into the structure to be withstood and the permeability of body fluids to be significantly increased. Metal porous TPMSs can be easily fabricated and are well known for BTE [173][174][175][176][177][178][179]. However, on the other hand, there is very limited progress and development of TPMS bioactive ceramic surfaces, although there are some recent studies in the literature [76,180,181].…”
