Numerical Taxonomy of Bacterial Isolates Associated with a Freshwater Fishery

Abstract: Phenetic data on over 600 aerobic, heterotrophic, aquatic bacteria from a freshwater fish farm were collected and examined by numerical taxonomy procedures using 124 unit characters. Reference cultures representing 36 taxa were included in the analyses. The data were examined using the simple matching (SsM) and Jaccard (S,) coefficients, and clustering was achieved using unweighted average linkage. At similarity values of 70% or above as defined with the S, coefficient, 82% of the environmental isolates were r… Show more

“…which appeared to be present in the kidneys of some turbot. These bacteria have been shown to be avirulent in fish (Ferndndez et al 1993) are generally viewed as part of the normal water microbiota (Allen et al 1983, Austin Nieto et al 1984). The capacity of these bacteria to inhibit growth of A. salmonicida is well known (Cornick et al 1969, Dubois-Darnaudpeys 1977.…”

“…Previous studies include descriptions of microbial spoilage [9,72], relationship between environment and fish microflora [10], monitoring of changes in fish farms [11], nutritional role of the intestinal flora [12] and the antibiotic resistance profile of the indigenous flora [13]. Preceding research suggests that digestive enzymes present in fish digestive tract can elucidate some aspects of their nutritive physiology [73] and thus be supportive to develop nutritional strategies for fish feeding and diet formulation [14][15][16][17].…”

“…However, further intergeneric placements proposed in these two studies differed considerably. In one study (2), investigators placed the genus Acinetobacter close to members of our rRNA superfamily I (Enterobacteriaceae, Vibrionaceae, and the genus Aeromonas), whereas the other study (1) located the genus Acinetobacter close to Alcaligenes faecalis, a member of our rRNA superfamily 111. Our hybridization results (Table 1, Table 4, and Fig.…”
