Nurses' Remaining in Everyday Nursing Practice—A Comprehensive Model

Abstract: Previous theoretical and empirical models of nurses' remaining in everyday nursing practice are explained by elements such as intent to stay and desire to stay. The aim of this study is to describe a comprehensive model of nurses' remaining in everyday nursing practice. This study was designed in three sequential stages: first, the emp… Show more

“…A recent study reports that self‐realisation is important for nurses to remain in nursing practice (Kristoffersen, 2019). Research indicates that nurses seek self‐realisation through work and leave their current position if it limits opportunity for self‐realisation (Côté, 2016; Halter et al, 2017; Øster et al, 2017).…”

“…Self‐realisation is further related to aspects such as autonomy and professional development, which involves using one's skills and abilities (Côté, 2016). Self‐realisation is also described as being sensitive to one's own personal qualities to carry out a creative nursing practice (Johannessen, 2011), living in accordance with one's self‐understanding (Kristoffersen, 2019), and is associated with orientation for professional achievements (Lin et al, 2007) and motivation for work (Häggström et al, 2005). Altgh such aspects are independently described in qualitative research, there seem to be few qualitative studies investigating what it means to realise oneself, particularly related to remaining in nursing practice.…”
