Nursing as means of governmentality

Abstract: We explore the limits and potentials of the concept of governmentality to the understanding of nursing as a health profession. This concept can generate a form of critical immobilism, but also promotes a more politically complex understanding of nursing practice.

“…Through this rationality, they shape desire, aspirations, roles, needs, and behavior of people (Certoma, 2015;Ayo, 2012). The exercise of power using its productive, subtle form, makes the process of this knowledge of production possible (Ferlie et al, 2011;Holmes et al, 2002;Certoma, 2015). Thus, Gordon (1997) argues that the whole aspects of modern societies are most likely to be understood, only by reconstructing certain 'techniques of power' or of 'power/ knowledge' which is designed to observe, monitor, shape, and control individual's behaviour.…”

“…It is called as pastoral power, one of the power exercised by the governmentality regime, to shape people's conduct through a specifi c knowledge of a subject (Holmes, 2002). These techniques are part of the therapeutic tools used for counseling, personality modifi cation personal development, health education and, of course, psychiatric care (Hindess, 1996in Holmes, 2002.…”

“…A historical understanding of the development of the profession and the practice of nursing, and the power relations both internal and external, places the nursing self in its broader social context. This raises questions of power, privilege and moral assumptions that nurses can bring to their practice (Holmes & Gastaldo, 2002;Perron et al, 2004;Perron et al, 2010). A historical sensibility helps put these personal values and beliefs, and the values of clients, in their historical and social context, and considers the importance of this context for whole person care.…”

“…While there is arguably a strong tradition of reflection and visioning in PT, very little of this work has translated into the kind of robust theoretical analysis that has been extensively reported in other health professions. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Others have written about the lack of an established theoretical framework in PT. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Although our practice is underpinned by theoretical knowledge, we have largely borrowed our conceptual groundings from elsewhere in the biomedical, physical, and social sciences 13 or concentrated on ''middle range theories'' that are specific to different areas of practice.…”
