Crucial must‐know items for every nurse involved in the care of patients treated with opioid medications include strong knowledge of opioid pharmacology; optimal treatment duration; methods to keep these drugs secure and methods of disposal; considerations concerning the administration to patients; signs and symptoms of tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal; characteristics of patients at risk of misuse; and the awareness of the worsening problem of opioid misuse (Compton & Blacher, 2020; Costello, 2015; Manworren & Gilson, 2015).
