Nursing staff’s evaluation of facilitators and barriers during implementation of wireless nurse call systems in residential care facilities. A cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background: Traditional nurse call systems used in residential care facilities rely on patients to summon assistance for routine or emergency needs. Wireless nurse call systems (WNCS) offer new affordances for persons unable to actively or consciously engage with the system, allowing detection of hazardous situations, prevention and timely treatment, as well as enhanced nurse workflows. This study aimed to explore facilitators and barriers of implementation of WNCSs in residential care facilities. Methods: The… Show more

“…Although the implementation of technologies such as telenursing should ideally solve or alleviate this problem, the process of technology introduction is still demanding as it requires the involvement of staff for additional organisational and administrative tasks or causes interruptions in the daily nursing routine, thus impacting the nursing process [ 61 ]. Staff shortages, high-pressure situations and the extremely demanding task of implementation can be a major barrier to DNT usage and evaluation, especially if knowledge of the DNT is not easily available and its application difficult to learn [ 62 ]. Such procedural and staffing challenges described above also pose barriers to the health economic evaluation of DNT.…”

“…Third, we set cut-offs for barriers (≥20%) and facilitators (≥80%) in line with other studies that have used the MIDI (Deenik et al, 2019;Dugstad et al, 2020). Although several items did not qualify as barriers or facilitators under these standards, they still can impact implementation significantly (Greenhalgh et al, 2004).…”
