Nursing Surge Capacity Strategies for Management of Critically Ill Adults with COVID-19

Abstract: Background: There is a vital need to develop strategies to improve nursing surge capacity for caring of patients with coronavirus (COVID-19) in critical care settings. COVID-19 has spread rapidly, affecting thousands of patients and hundreds of territories. Hospitals, through anticipation and planning, can serve patients and staff by developing strategies to cope with the complications that a surge of COVID-19 places on the provision of adequate intensive care unit (ICU) nursing staff—both in numbers and in tr… Show more

“…The binary logistic regression analysis used in our study quantitatively suggests that the COVID-19 patients who have age > 50 years, who are males, or who have history of HTN and/or DM may have up to 9-fold increased chances of mortality than those patients who are young, who are females and are nondiabetic and normotensive. This is in line with the previous reports that suggest similar correlation between mortality and these factors(2,3,4,5,6,7).…”

This is in line with the previous reports that suggest similar correlation between mortality and these factors [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. In a previously reported study conducted in Saudi Arabia HTN and type 2 Diabetes mellitus were the most comorbidities in both genders of all included patients accounting for 45.7% and 28.5% retrospectively [9] and this was expected as the present study deals with moderate to severe COVID-19 hospitalized patients.…”

“…As part of these strategies, skill mix and nurse staffing are manipulated to reduce costs and provide quality care to patients (Aiken et al, 2013; Jacob et al, 2015; NHHRC, 2009). Adding to this, the COVID 19 pandemic has placed further strain on the healthcare system resulting in the need to build surge workforce capacity to meet the needs of patients (Al Mutair et al, 2020; Marshall et al, 2020). Healthcare organisations have been required to reframe the delivery of patient care examining options to augment and extend the nursing and healthcare workforce.…”

“…Healthcare organisations have been required to reframe the delivery of patient care examining options to augment and extend the nursing and healthcare workforce. A common strategy is a tiered healthcare team approach to patient care delivery based on the idea of experienced staff supervising less experienced or lower trained staff members working together to meet the patients’ needs (Al Mutair et al, 2020; Marshall et al, 2020). This may occur in situations where tasks traditionally performed by one worker are shifted to another worker (APPG, 2016).…”
