Nurturing Communities of Inquiry: A Formative Study of the DojoIBL Platform

Abstract: Abstract. This formative study introduces DojoIBL, a web-based platform to support collaborative inquiry-based learning processes. By supporting communication and collaboration with new technological affordances, DojoIBL aims at nurturing communities of inquiry. The study elaborates on the theoretical underpinning of DojoIBL, describes its added value and presents a detailed explanation about the functionalities supported. Thereafter, an evaluation about how users perceived DojoIBL has been performed. Besides,… Show more

“…These communications are volatile, elusive and they occur in real time, thus features like notifications are needed to keep the flow of the conversation. Some examples of this type of mobile activity can be found in studies that used instant messaging together with notifications (Chiang et al, 2014a, 2014b, Song, 2014, 2016Song & Kong, 2014;Suárez, Ternier, Prinsen, & Specht, 2016). Comparing synchronous and asynchronous interactions, they do not only differ on the underlying technology.…”

“…Additionally, it has been considered essential for scientific innovation and the future knowledge society [1,6,15]. The usage of technology in the field of IBL has led to the development of solutions like Do-joIBL, an open source implementation that enables flexible structuring of collaborative inquiry processes [13]. DojoIBL is a cloud-based redesign of the weSPOT [12] tool suite that has been conceived to address challenges like scalability, seamlessly and flexible inquiry support, access to open educational resources (OER) and intuitive orchestration support.…”
