“…[58][59][60] It involves 4680 men and women aged 40-59 years from 17 population samples, four in Japan, three in the PRC, two in the UK, and eight in the US. Each sample was selected randomly from a population list, stratified by age and gender, to give approximately equal numbers in each of four 10-year age-gender groups.…”

“…Several placebo-controlled antihypertensive trials in China have employed a dihydropyridine CCB as the first-line drug for hypertension treatment. [1][2][3][4][5] Indeed, nitrendipine was used in the Syst-China (Systolic Hypertension in China trial), 1,2 nifedipine in the Shanghai trial 3 and felodipine in the FEVER (Felodipine Event Reduction) trial. 4 Despite the fact that these CCBs are short or intermediate acting, active antihypertensive treatment significantly reduced the risk of fatal and non-fatal strokes, the major complication of hypertension in the Chinese population, by 38, 58 and 27% in the Syst-China, 1 Shanghai 3 and FEVER trials, 4 respectively.…”

“…First, CCBs are probably more effective in lowering blood pressure in Eastern Asians, because, when compared with the White population, Eastern Asians have high dietary intakes of sodium 5 and are more likely to be salt sensitive. 6 Second, CCBs, compared with other classes of antihypertensive drugs, provide more protection against stroke; 7,8 hence, they are more relevant because the major complication of hypertension in Eastern Asians is stroke rather than myocardial infarction.…”

“…The American Diabetes Association also suggests that patients with T2DM should increase their consumption of dietary fibre to adjust blood sugar and blood lipids, and thus reduce the risk of diabetic complications (6) . Compared with Western populations, Chinese people usually have more dietary fibre intake (12) . The average level of total and soluble fibre intakes in Chinese diabetes patients were reported to reach 26?5 and 10?4 g/d, respectively, in a small-scale hospital-based survey (13) , more than the moderate amount recommended by the American Diabetes Association (total 24 g/d; soluble fibre 8 g/d and insoluble fibre 16 g/d) (6) .…”
