“…Proper nutrition is essential in critically ill patients to compensate uncontrolled anabolism and catabolism, maintaining a competent immune system, and improving patient outcome during intensive care unit (ICU) stay [3]. Several authors show the impact of the severe metabolic situation in the critical care patient on nutritional status [4], and its relationship with nutritional deficiency [5].…”

“…Early onset of parenteral nutritional support, when used with enteral nutritional support to increase caloric supply, is associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation. On the other hand, insufficient caloric supply is related to poor prognosis, but overnutrition is clearly harmful since is related to hyperglycemia, hypercapnia, fluid overload, and hepatic steatosis (Hiesmayr 2012). Nutritional support should be managed carefully as RS could deteriorate the situation in severely ill patients.…”

“…Many patients are admitted to ICUs due to a systemic dysfunction which requires organic artificial support or nursery care which cannot be offered on the ward (Hiesmayr 2012). Although RS is not exclusive of ICU patients, it has important implications in critical and intensive care.…”

“…Patients in critical care units for more than 1-2 days need nutritional risk assessment, including evaluation of gastrointestinal function, and close monitoring 39 . They may need nutritional support to compensate for energy deficits.…”
