Nutritional assessment among adult patients with suspected or confirmed active tuberculosis disease in rural India

Abstract: Objectives Our study goal was to evaluate a set of nutritional indicators among adults with confirmed or suspected active tuberculosis disease in southern India, given the limited literature on this topic. Study objectives were to assess the: I) double burden of malnutrition at individual and population levels; II) relative performance of anthropometric indicators (body mass index, waist circumference) in diabetes screening; and III) associations between vitamin D and metabolic abnormalities. Design Cross-sect… Show more

“…Limited research has been conducted at the individual level. Moreover, the published literature on individual-level DBM among adults has mainly examined the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia or vitamin A deficiency [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Characterizing DBM using anemia and vitamin A deficiency as the only measures of micronutrient deficiency may be constrained because, in other countries, iodine deficiency is also of public health significance.…”

“…This cross-sectional study included adult outpatients (N 5 32) and a subset of participants in a larger cohort (N 5 834) from whom gut microbiome data were available. 32 Study participants were recruited and enrolled at a hospital (Arogyavaram Medical Center) in a rural region of South India. Inclusion criteria were as follows: outpatient status; ATBD based on Xpert MTB/RIF; and initiating anti-TB treatment.…”

“…Given that TB prevalence is higher among malnourished individuals and a large proportion of people living with TB are malnourished, there is a critical potential role for concurrent screening for malnutrition and TB. Unfortunately, BMI, which is often used as a measure of malnutrition, is not an ideal indicator, particularly in the context of South and Southeast Asia [25]. Nutritional assessment for PWTB with anthropometry, even though metrics like BMI are imperfect nutritional measures, should be the minimum standard given the prognostic value of nutritional status [14].…”
