Nutritional status and oxidative stress in an elderly Sardinian population

Abstract: Weight loss and overweight/obesity – frequent\ud consequences of malnutrition – may impair functional status\ud and worsen concomitant morbidities in the elderly,\ud often through changes in oxidative balance. In order to\ud verify the relationships between these factors, a group of elderly people living on the island of Sardinia (Italy)\ud underwent health and nutritional status assessment and oxidative balance evaluation. The elderly subjects had significantly\ud higher d-ROMs test and body mass index (BMI) … Show more

“…High GPx activity in patients at high risk of nutrition-related complications according to the GNRI might indicate the highest level of oxidative stress in this group of patients. Both current results and previous reports indicate that there is an inverse relation between oxidative stress and the nutritional status of older patients [ 9 , 45 ]. Moreover, severe oxidative stress is linked to a presence of metabolic syndrome in older individuals [ 46 ].…”

“…Malnutrition and oxidative stress. In malnutrition, oxidative stress is heightened, and impoverished nutritional status is conspicuously associated with immune dysfunction (42,43). Hepatic steatosis has also been found in the malnourished animals and humans, with a likely link to oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction (44,45).…”

“…27 The mean BAP in Japanese subjects was markedly higher than that previously reported in European/American subjects. 28 This may be one cause of the longevity of the Japanese. However, further epidemiological studies should be carried out to support this hypothesis.…”
