Nymphs of Some Species of the Tribes Drabescini and Paraboloponini with a Proposed Synonymy of Paraboloponini with Drabescini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae)

Abstract: The last instar nymphs of some species from the genera Drabescus, We/maya, Athysanopsis, Kutara, and Dryadomorpha are described. Based on mainly nymphal characters the tribe Paraboloponini is considered a junior synonym ofDrabescini. The nymphal characters uniting these groups are as follows: head with dorsal and ventral longitudinal carinae, antennae long; the entire body not rarely covered with numerous setae, abdomen with 2-8 longitudinal rows of setae, in some cases on tubercles; pygofer with pair of long … Show more

“…Th is situation is very similar to some other tribes of Deltocephalinae (e.g. Limotettigini and Drabescini) which are very purely defi ned based on adult characters, but distinct based on nymphal morphology (see Dmitriev 2002dDmitriev , 2004a, and the key for identifi cation of tribes of Deltocephalinae below). Based on the set of nymphal features, the new tribe is apparently closely related to Scaphytopiini and Hecalini, especially to its more primitive subtribe Glossocratina.…”

“…Th is paper emphasizes the nymphal characters important for distinguishing higher level taxa based on their nymphs. It continues a series of publications on leafhopper nymphs (Dmitriev 2001(Dmitriev , 2002c(Dmitriev , 2002d(Dmitriev , 2003(Dmitriev , 2004a(Dmitriev , 2004b(Dmitriev , 2006Dietrich and Dmitriev 2003). Th e included key is only preliminary and intended to encourage additional research on nymphs of Nearctic leafhoppers and their morphology.…”

“…Dmitriev (2004a) synonymized Drabescini and Paraboloponini based on shared characters of the nymph, and its monophyly was supported in phylogenetic analyses. Here, we accept the synonymy by Dmitriev (2004a) but continue to recognize separate subtribes following the circumscription of the two groups by Zhang & Webb (1996) due to the morphological differences of the adults that distinguish them. the phylogenetic analyses here suggest that the tribe is closely related to Scaphoideini, with which it shares long antennae and profemur row AV with thin hair-like setae or without setae.…”

“…Our analyses provided no evidence of a close relationship between Drabescini and Selenocephalini, which some previous authors (e.g., Linnavuori & Al-Ne'amy 1983;Zhang & Webb 1996) placed together in a separate subfamily, Selenocephalinae.
