In Portugal, three terms are used to define the final phase of an intervention of conservation and restoration: reintegration or integration, pictorial or chromatic, and retouching. This article is a survey of some bibliographic reference sources, national and international, in order to understand which of the three terms is the most used. Palavras-chave ResumoEm Portugal utilizam-se três termos para definir a fase final de uma intervenção de conservação e restauro: reintegração ou integração, pictórica ou cromática, e retoque. Neste artigo é feito um levantamento de algumas fontes bibliográficas de referência, nacionais e internacionais, de forma a se perceber qual dos três termos é o mais utilizado.

Along with other developments that have occurred since the publication of the last issue, two should be highlighted: Conservar Património entering the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and, secondly, conforming with all the 36 parameters of the digital journals evaluation by Latindex-the information system on journals of scientific research, technical, professional and scientific and cultural dissemination that are published in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. Hence, even though the journal Conservar Património is published by an organization of national scope and encourages the publication in Portuguese, some of its features are, increasingly, those of an international journal-not only due to these recent developments, but also thanks to the process that submitted articles are subjected to, to the international Editorial Board (whose members are once again gratefully acknowledged), and to the indexing in bibliographic databases of international reference. The publication of papers by authors from other countries, namely from Brazil and Spain, that has occurred frequently in recent issues, is both cause and consequence of this welcomed internationalization of a Portuguese publication .

“…Com base nestas leis, Brandi sugere que um/a observador/a de uma obra com lacunas tende espontaneamente a percepcionar estas últimas como figura, relegando a imagem artística para o papel de (plano de) fundo, sendo que "Desse retrocesso da figura a fundo, desse violento inserir da lacuna como figura num contexto que a tenta expelir, nasce a perturbação que produz a lacuna, muito mais, note-se de passagem, do que pela interrupção formal que opera no seio da imagem" [2, p. 89]. Given its impact on the perception of observers, the reintegration of lacunae in works of pictorial art is one of the most delicate and debated conservation-restoration actions. This text describes the methodology that guided the technical choices regarding the chromatic reintegration of the lacunae and the protective finishing of the mural surfaces in the Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Mercy) Hermitage, in Loulé. Additional reference is made to the way in which those choices/methodology articulated the symbolic and religious values of the hermitage paintings with the ethical and deontological principles of conservation-restoration. Although the type of intervention and its final outcome should always be discussed with the stakeholders, and eventual consultants, technical choices will necessarily be made by the conservator-restorer, who must therefore have training, experience and sensitivity adequate to the critical analysis required by this type of decision making.
