Object-based image analysis approach for vessel detection on optical and radar images

Abstract: Commercial satellites for Earth observation can integrate conventional positioning and tracking systems for monitoring legal and illegal activities by sea, in order to effectively detect and prevent events threatening human life and environment. This study describes an object-oriented approach to detect vessels combining high-and medium-resolution optical and radar images. Once detected, the algorithm estimates their position, length, and heading and assigns a speed range. Tests are done using WorldView-2, Qui… Show more

“…The analysis of co-occurrences of different data in single papers illustrated the interest of combinations of different data sources, mainly when using metadata-less data (radar and imagery) (e.g. [80,81]). It also points at the -yet-very isolated use of VMS data.…”

“…In the context of research in marine surveillance and in comparison with AIS, the SUMO algorithm has been used as a detection tool and a reference for developing effective alternative methods for SAR imagery object detection (Mazzarella et al, 2015;Santamaria et al, 2017;Grover et al, 2018;Aiello et al, 2019). This method allowed us to obtain an extensive dataset, thanks to the Sentinel-1 project that is fully operational since late 2016.…”

“…H. Greidanus et al developed the Search for Unidentified Maritime Objects (SUMO) algorithm which is a pixel-based CFAR detector for multilook radar images [29]. New CFAR developments consider object-based approaches [30] and a CFAR without any sliding window for multitarget situations based on variational Bayesian inference for very complex backgrounds [31].…”
