Objective Assessment of Sleep Patterns among Night-Shift Workers: A Scoping Review

Abstract: In this scoping review of the literature, we identified the types and the parameters of objective measurements to assess sleep patterns among night-shift workers. We conducted a literature search using electronic databases for studies published from 1991 to 2020 and charted and summarized key information. We included 32 studies in the review. Polysomnography was used in 6 studies and wearable sleep detection devices were utilized in 26 studies. The duration of sleep assessment using the wearable devices ranged… Show more

“…However, in our sample, as suggested by contingency analyses, salivary melatonin levels are not in a significant relationship with any of the sleep questionnaire outcomes, suggesting an overall sleep wellbeing and positive adaptation to clockwise rotation shifts among nurses. In future studies, in order to support subjective awareness, the concurrent utilization of wearable devices would be useful to instrumentally assess the actual sleep patterns [ 51 ].…”

“…Second, this study used subjective questionnaires, a method frequently used to measure sleep. However, assessing sleep with this method can have a disadvantage because sleep patterns can change daily (Shin et al, 2021). Therefore, an objective assessment of sleep patterns using an accelerometer is important for evaluating the sleep pattern (Krystal and Edinger, 2008;Smith et al, 2018;Zhu et al, 2019) of students in future longitudinal and experimental studies.…”

“…Other innovative methods applied to the study of shift schedule characteristics include deriving exposure through job exposure metrics (eg, 19) and through data mining techniques (20), and using co-twin designs to evaluate familial confounding in the impact of nightwork (eg, 21). In addition, increasingly sophisticated wearable technology is available for the intensive measurement of sleep and physiological functioning in field studies (22). Other tools are emerging that may yet prove useful in the study of working time arrangements.…”
