Observation of 115 GHz high-order harmonic noise-like pulse in Er/Yb-doped fiber laser

Abstract: We report on an ultrahigh repetition rate harmonic noise-like Er/Yb-doped double-cladding fiber laser that can operate through the nonlinear polarization evolution mechanism. Highorder harmonic noise-like pulses (NLPs) with a repetition rate as high as 115 GHz have been generated in fiber lasers. At the cavity dispersion of net anomalous, the noise-like pulse with the full width at half maximum of 15 nm was generated at a central wavelength of 1560 nm, with an output power of 628 mW at the pump power of 8 W. “…There are no characteristic fringes on the spectral profiles in the NLP state, so the interaction among multiple pulses is incoherent. When the multiple pulses are the proper condition, the high order harmonic mode locking of NLPs can also be obtained [25][26][27]. In addition, NLPs have a great advantage for forming smooth and flat supercontinuum [28][29][30], because the NLP packet is made up of many pulses with different temporal widths and peak power [21].…”

“…In most of these cases, the multiple wave packets display similar characteristics (duration, ampl itude), intracavity energy is distributed equally between them, and they tend to adopt a uniform distribution along the cavity, with equal spacing between them (harmonic mode locking). The number of NLPs coexisting in the cavity can be as small as 2 or 3 [27], but can also be as high as 1000 [15] or even range as tens of thousands [9,48]. In general, the formation of multiple NLPs in the laser is detrimental for applications and should be avoided, as it reduces the maximal NLP energy.…”
