Observation of a strong-coupling effect on electron-ion collisions in ultracold plasmas

Abstract: Ultracold plasmas (UCPs) provide a well-controlled system for studying multiple aspects in plasma physics that include collisions and strong coupling effects. By applying a short electric field pulse to a UCP, a plasma electron center-of-mass (CM) oscillation can be initiated. For accessible parameter ranges, the damping rate of this oscillation is determined by the electron-ion collision rate. We performed measurements of the oscillation damping rate with such parameters and compared the measured rates to bot… Show more

“…The fall of the RDF towards r → 0 is steeper in the case with a magnetic than in the case without. This steepness is a signature Experiments focused on electron dynamics make measurements on 1-200 ns timescales [39,40]. Such experiments are designed in such a way that the electrons possess a very small initial kinetic energy due to the photoionization of ultracold atoms [39].…”

“…Recent laboratory experiments have shown ultracold neutral plasmas (UNPs) to be effective HEDP simulators over a limited range of parameters (11,(43)(44)(45)(46)(47)(48)(49)(50). In these stronglycoupled, non-degenerate, quasi-homogeneous, quasi-steady-state plasmas the charge state is well-known, the initial electron temperature, independent of the ion temperature, is chosen with sub-percent accuracy, and the time-evolving temperatures and densities of each ion species are readily determined.…”

“…The UNP parameters investigated border on the strongly coupled region for the electrons, with Γ up to 0.15 investigated in this work (and larger values predicted to be possible in UNPs). 33 In addition, degrees of electron magnetization into the "extreme" region are studied since it is possible to achieve these extreme degrees of magnetization in UNPs with only mild laboratory fields.…”

“…It is possible to conduct experiments shortly after the UNP formation where this expansion is not significant. 33 In this work, we concern ourselves with the AC conductivity heating for oscillations in the longitudinal direction (i.e. the oscillating electric field and applied magnetic field directions are parallel) as that is the easiest geometry available in experimental UNP systems.…”
