Observation of interface superconductivity in a SnSe2 /epitaxial graphene van der Waals heterostructure

Abstract: We report on the direct observation of interface superconductivity in single-unit-cell SnSe2 films grown on graphitized SiC(0001) substrate by means of van der Waals epitaxy. Tunneling spectrum in the superconducting state reveals rather conventional character with a fully gapped order parameter. The occurrence of superconductivity is further confirmed by the presence of vortices under external magnetic field. Through interface engineering, we unravel the mechanism of superconductivity that originates from a t… Show more

“…Our electric-field gating can increase carrier concentration by one or two orders of magnitude. The SnSe 2 with high carrier density has been demonstrated to be superconductors with T c = 3.9 K[28] and 4.8 K [29]. However, we noticed that this gating method may not change the compound with large bandgap ( >2 eV) into metal, and the tuning ability is limited under the circumstances.…”

“…On the other hand, charge transfer mechanism may also play an important role in the process [24]. When two materials come into contact, electrons will be transferred from one to the other until their Fermi levels are equal [25]. The work functions of graphene and Sb2Te3 are 4.5 eV [26] and 5.33 eV [27].…”

“…The modulationdoping induced two-dimensional hole liquid (2DHL) confined in the CuO 2 planes has come into being. In addition, the interface superconductivity in a structurally simple van der Waals heterostructure composed of semiconducting metal dichalcogenide SnSe 2 and graphene was realized very recently (Figure 1(g-i)) [26]. A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) marked with nonzero density of states (DOS) in the large semiconducting gap was found at the SnSe 2 /graphene interface, which bears the responsibility for superconductivity observed regardless of the semiconducting nature in bulk SnSe 2 .…”
