Observations of Faint, Hard-Band X-Ray Sources in the Field of CRSS J0030.5+2618 with the [ITAL]CHANDRA X-RAY OBSERVATORY[/ITAL][ITAL]Chandra X-Ray Observatory[/ITAL] and the Hobby-Eberly Telescope

Abstract: We present results from a study of 2-8 keV X-ray sources detected by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory in the field of the z = 0.516 cluster CRSS J0030.5+2618. In our 63.5 arcmin 2 search area, we detect 10 sources with 2-8 keV fluxes down to ≈ 4 × 10 −15 erg cm −2 s −1 ; our lowest flux sources are ≈ 10 times fainter than those previously available for study in this band. Our derived source density is about an order of magnitude larger than previous sourc… Show more

“…At fainter magnitude one would expect both a larger fraction of dust-reddened objects (in analogy with indications from the X-ray data, Brandt et al 2000;Mushotzky et al 2000) and a more significant contamination from the host galaxy.…”

“…Chandra observations have confirmed and extended down to lower fluxes these results (Mushotzky et al 2000;Fiore et al 2000b;Brandt et al 2000;Giacconi et al 2001;Barger et al 2001).…”

“…Several deep hard X-ray surveys (>2 keV) have been started with Chandra and XMM-Newton to date (e.g., Brandt et al 2000;Mushotzky et al 2000;Hornschemeier et al 2001;Giacconi et al 2001;Hasinger et al 2001), but most of their optical identification is at an early stage or their total number of sources is still relatively small (Barger et al 2001).…”
