“…A. punctata is also associated with joint infections, meningitis, peritonitis, and infection of the eyes, while their involvement in gastroenteritis remains controversial to some degree [24]. The infection rate of A. punctata is higher in individuals who have either chronic diseases [7,16] or a compromised immune system [2,17]. A. punctata harbors antibiotic resistance plasmid pFBAOT6 which enables it to become immune against all major classes of antimicrobial drugs [39].…”

“…Aeromonas is considered to be an opportunistic or secondary pathogen. Most reports of Aeromonas infections describe patients who were either immunologically compromised [2,17] or having chronic diseases [7,16]. A. punctata harbors antibiotic resistance plasmid pFBAOT6 which enables it to become immune against all major classes of antimicrobial drugs [39].…”

“…The resistance of Aeromonas to penicillin and ampicillin is probably due to the production of beta-lactamase (Bulger and Sherris, 1966). Aeromonas species are consistently sensitive to chloramphenicol and tetracycline and Abrams, Zierdt, and Brown (1971) have suggested that these antibiotics be given in combination as soon as a tentative diagnosis of Aeromonas infection is made. However, in patients with Aeromonas septicaemia the use of an appropriate bactericidal antibiotic such as kanamycin should also be considered.…”

“…The resistance of the patient influences the type of organism. Johanson, Pierce, and Sanford (1969) report that Gramnegative colonization of the pharynx is common in the sick but rare in the healthy hospital patient even when no antibiotics are used, while Gramnegative bacillaemia is extensively reported in immunosuppressed patients whether the immunosuppression is due to steroids, uraemia or cytotoxic drugs (Brumfitt and Leigh, 1969;Grant, Horowitz, and Lorian, 1969;Abrams, Zierdt, and Brown, 1971 ;Mummery et al, 1971).…”
