Obstructed infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection: The challenge of palliative stenting for the stenotic vertical vein

Abstract: Introduction Obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is one of the commonest seen emergencies in pediatric cardiology centers. Case presentation Our case was diagnosed to have this anomaly, showing early respiratory distress resulting from severe pulmonary congestion. Palliative stenting of the obstruction was done, which helped in stabilizing the debilitated hemodynamics of the baby before surgery, thus a good surgical outcome and prognosis are e… Show more

“…Some of these infants may benefit from transcatheter relief of obstruction before surgery especially very sick, small premature infants with co-morbidities or with isomeric hearts [6][7][8][9][10][11]. The idea of preoperative stabilization by temporarily relieving the obstruction was developed to improve outcomes for neonatal obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection [12]. We are reporting a case of obstructed supracardiac type total anomalous pulmonary venous connection who was greatly benefited by transcatheter relief of obstructed levoatrial cardinal vein.…”

“…21 For instance, blocked vertical vein drainage causes acute lung congestion and significant respiratory distress that resists traditional medical treatment. 22 Due to high portal venous pressures, the infracardiac type may cause a fusiform or saccular portal aneurism. 21…”
