Occult stress incontinence in women with pelvic organ prolapse

Abstract: Preoperative testing is useful to identify women with genitourinary prolapse who have occult SUI. Women with a positive result may need a systematic clinical evaluation and urodynamic studies to characterize the incontinence. They can be then counseled preoperatively regarding concomitant anti-incontinence procedures.

“…Hence, this study is the first of its kind in India. The reported prevalence of the urinary incontinence across India ranges between 10-67.9% [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. The prevalence of self-reported uterine prolapse is 7.6% [7] and anal incontinence is 1.3% [10].…”

“…Reena et al demostraron en su serie que la posibilidad de encontrar incontinencia de orina oculta, aumenta al doble en pacientes mayores de 50 años 22 . Esto no debe extrañarnos, ya que la incontinencia de orina de esfuerzo aumenta con la edad, lo que constituye un factor de riesgo también para prolapso.…”

“…However, during surgery to reduce the prolapsed uterus or anterior vaginal wall it may be noted from the urodynamic study that 36 to 80% of the women with pelvic organ prolapse have coexisting urodynamic stress incontinence. These patients have occult stress urinary incontinence (Haessler et al, 2005;Reena et al, 2007). In addition, postoperative stress urinary incontinence (de novo stress urinary incontinence) has been noted in 10 to 30% of women following prolapse repair (Bump et al, 1996;Hung et al, 2004;Reena et al, 2007).…”
