Occurrence and antibiogram of Listeria monocytogenes Isolates from Retail Meat Shops at Erbil City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is well-known globally as one of the most significant foodborne bacterial pathogens. Listeriosis may trigger life-threatening illness, such as severe sepsis, meningitis, sometimes resulting in lifelong harm and even death. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and antibiotic resistance pattern of L. monocytogenes in red meats sold at retail outlets in Erbil city, Kurdistan region, Iraq. Three hundred and seventy-five (375) samples were aseptically collected from retail meat shops … Show more

“…The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Listeria isolates is variable. Many often, the isolates of Listeria species are multidrug-resistant [ 28 , 30 ], which could be of prime concern in treating the causes of infection in animals. In most acute cases of listeriosis, the animals often die with little time for treatment.…”

“…However, in a study carried out in Iraq on LMO isolates, it was shown that 98.1, 94.2 and 82.7% of the isolates were resistant to streptomycin, gentamicin and ampicillin, respectively. This resistance profile seems alarming as the aforementioned antibiotics are the drugs of choice for the treatment of listeriosis ( Al-Mashhadany, 2019 ). In such cases, other antibiotics have been successfully used for the treatment of listeriosis such as vancomycin, erythromycin, tetracycline or chloramphenicol ( Charpentier et al, 1995 ; Hof et al, 1997 ).…”

“…It is a zoonotic disease that affects people all over the globe. In particular, sub clinically infected food animals represent a significant reservoir of human illness [3,4]. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) is an extremely virulent and invasive species of bacteria that causes typhoid fever in humans.…”
