Occurrence and causes of mortality among active and resting larvae of Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) in Giza, Egypt

Abstract: Rates of natural sickness and mortality among active larvae of Pectinophora gossypiella Saunders, found in cotton squares flowers and bolls throughout two active seasons (July‐September, 1974 and 1975) were very low: 0–0.6% sick and 3.5–9.4 dead. During the resting season, however, rate of natural sickness and mortality increased gradually from November till May. Throughout the two resting seasons 1973/74 and 1974/75, the respective average rates of healthy larvae were 54.4 and 57.8%, sick larvae carrying derm… Show more

“…In present study, the isolated bacteria from P. gossypiella were found to be different from previous studies performed by Abul-Nasr et al (1978); Khoja et al, (2006) and Reda et al (2013). They isolated 13 bacteria from P.gossypiella, including, Bacillus thuringiensis, B.…”

“…Also, the study on the bacterial community of PBW may give a better chance to find significant microbial control agent against this pest. In this regard, many bacterial strains representing several genera were isolated from infected active and / or resting PBW larvae (Abul-Nasr et al, 1978;Khoja et al, 2006 andReda et al, 2013). Furthermore, the symbiont, Enterobacter gergoviae, isolated from the gut of the pink bollworm (PBW), has been transformed to express Cyt1A, a cytolytic protein toxin lethal to mosquito and black fly larvae, as a model system.…”

“…Two strains of pathogenic bacteria; Bacillus thuringiensis var. finitismus and Bacillus cereus, were isolated from sick and dead larvae of the pink-boll worm, Pectinophora gossypiella, during the resting stage (ABUL NASR, TAWFIK, AMMAR and FARRAG 1978). Several previous reports have referred to the pathogenecity of B. t. thuringiensis and B. cereus, against insects, including P. gossypiella.…”

“…Therefore, available safe control measures should be adopted to control insect pests to keep the environment (ecosystem) clean, safe and healthy. (Abou El-Nasr et al, 1978;Amer, 2004). Use of safer insecticides at correct doses by safe methods is the primary requisite to successful control.…”
