Occurrence and distribution of canine cutaneous mast cell tumour characteristics among predisposed breeds

Abstract: Introduction: Breed predisposition to cutaneous mast cell tumours (MCT) in a population of dogs in Poland affected by various skin tumours was assessed, and the distribution of MCT characteristics such as histological grading, sex, age, and location, in predisposed breeds was evaluated. Material and Methods: The retrospective epidemiological study included 550 dogs affected by cutaneous MCTs with a reference group of 2,557 dogs diagnosed with other skin tumours. “…These values are similar to the respective estimates reported previously by studies of Labrador Retrievers with similar methodologies of 7.4-14.8% for neoplasia and 4.80-8.26% for mass disorders 27,28 . These results are supported by reported predispositions in Labrador Retrievers to neoplasms including lingual squamous cell carcinoma 70 , mast cell tumours [71][72][73] , soft tissue sarcoma 72 melanomas 74 and various neoplasms of the thoracic limb 75 .…”

“…in Brazil have described an incidence ranging between 20.9% and 22.4%, revealing MCT as the second-most frequent malignant neoplasm in dogs, after mammary gland tumors [16][17][18]. Some breeds are predisposed to MCT development, including Boxer; Bull Terrier; French Bulldog; Golden Retriever; Labrador Retriever; Shar-pei; and Dachshund [16,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…Nevertheless, MCT clinical behavior and aggressiveness seem to be influenced by dog breeds [15]. A plethora of evidence has suggested that purebred dogs such as Boxers, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, French Bulldogs, Dachshunds, and Shar-Pei are at risk of MCT [16][17][18]. However, little is known about crossbred dogs.…”
