A simple, sensitive and reliable HPLC-FLD method for the routine determination of 4-nonylphenol, 4-NP and 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-t-OP content in water samples was developed. The method consists in a liquid-liquid extraction of the target analytes with dichloromethane at pH 3.0-3.5 followed by the HPLC-FLD analysis of the organic extract using a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C8 column, isocratic elution with a mixed solvent acetonitrile/water 65:35, at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and applying a column temperature of 40°C. The method was validated and then applied with good results for the determination of 4-NP and 4-t-OP in Ialomiţa River water samples collected each month during 2006. The concentration levels of 4-NP and 4-t-OP vary between 0.08-0.17 μg/L with higher values of 0.24-0.37 μg/L in the summer months for 4-NP, and frequently <0.05 μg/L but also between 0.06-0.09 μg/L with higher values of 0.12-0.16 μg/L in July and August for 4-t-OP and were strongly influenced by sesonial and anthropic factors. The method was also applied on samples collected over 2 years 2007 and 2008 from urban wastewaters discharged into sewage or directly into the rivers by economic agents located in 30 Romanian towns. Good results were obtained when the method was used for analysis of effluents discharged into surface waters by 16 municipal wastewater treatment plants, during the year 2008.

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) have been found in surface waters worldwide. They are known for exerting adverse effects on animals of many species, including humans. EDCs comprise compounds of anthropogenic origin. They can enter waterways via either discharges from wastewater treatment plant (WWTPs), combined sewer overflows (CSO) or atmospheric deposition. In this work, the fate and removal of four phthalates and two alkylphenols: Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Di-n-Butyl phthalate (DnBP), Butyl Benzyl phthalate (BBP), Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), nonylphenol (NP) and octylphenol (OP) were investigated within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) using lamellar clarification and biofiltration. This plant receives about 240,000 m 3 d −1 of wastewater. The whole treatment process comprises: screening, grit removal, primary sedimentation using coagulant and flocculant, followed by biofiltration units. Phthalates and alkylphenols were monitored at three locations, including raw sewage, before primary treatment, decanted effluents, before biological treatment, and final effluents, just before discharge to receiving waters. Nine campaigns were performed in 2011 during different seasons.In 2.95 µg.l -1 ), followed by DEHP (0.95 to 6.43, median 2.30 µg.l -1 ) and NP (0.31 to 1.36, median 0.63 µg.l -1 ). Contaminant removal depends on the physicochemical characteristics of the compounds. For example, for lamellar clarification, removal efficiency was found to be strongly dependent to log Kow and, hence, to be highly correlated with their sorption coefficient (Kd). As a consequence, compounds with high log Kow (>3) were removed to a significant extent. DEHP was highly removed by lamellar clarification (68.8%), followed by BBP (61.5%) and NP (51.0%). Besides, DEP (log Kow < 3) was slightly removed (13.8%). During biofiltration, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds were equally eliminated. Therefore, DEP (87.3%), OP (88.0%) and DEHP (81.9%) were mostly removed during biological treatment.

The massive production and wide use of surfactants have resulted in a large amount of surfactant residuals being discharged into the environment, which could have an impact on arsenic behavior. In the present study, the influence of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and nonionic surfactant polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether (Triton X-100) on arsenic behavior was investigated in batch and column tests. The presence of SDBS and Triton X-100 reduced arsenic retention onto ferrihydrite (FH), enhanced arsenic transport through FH coated sand (FH-sand) columns and promoted arsenic release from the FH surface. With coexisting surfactants in solution, the equilibrium adsorbed amount of arsenic on FH decreased by up to 29.7% and the adsorption rate decreased by up to 52.3%.Pre-coating with surfactants caused a decrease in the adsorbed amount and adsorption rate of arsenic by up to 15.1% and 58.3%, respectively. Because of the adsorption attenuation caused by surfactants, breakthrough of As(V) and As(III) with SDBS in columns packed with FH-sand was 23.8% and 14.3% faster than that in those without SDBS, respectively. In columns packed with SDBS-coated FH-sand, transport of arsenic was enhanced to a greater extent.Breakthrough of As(V) and As(III) was 52.4% and 43.8% faster and the cumulative retention amount was 44.5% and 57.3% less than that in pure FH-sand column systems, respectively.Mobilization of arsenic by surfactants increased with the increase of the initial adsorbed amount of arsenic. The cumulative release amount of As(V) and As(III) from the packed column reached 10.8% and 36.0%, respectively.
