“…The removal efficiencies for the target MPs varied largely from −7% to 92.6% (p < 0.05) with secondary and tertiary treatment processes, and the results were consistent with previous work [28]. It is noted that EE2 showed negative removal efficiency (p < 0.05), probably due to the transformation from the conjugated form to the free form [29]. Except for EE2, only 27.8% of the removal efficiency was found for CBZ, which may be due to its persistence in conventional wastewater treatment processes.…”

“…All types of substances were distributed at a much higher rate in the solid phase than in the liquid phase. Ofloxacin had a mass load of 620 g/d and ciprofloxacin had a mass load of 47 g/d in samples taken between the anoxic and aerobic tanks, and at least 99% of both substances was found in the solid phase [17]. This was higher than the solid phase ratio of the antibiotics investigated in the activated sludge of the four STPs in this study (65%-96%), and was similar to the ratio determined in the return sludge (93%-97%).…”

“…This enables a more accurate assessment of the behavior and effective removal of pharmaceuticals. In particular, studies have evaluated the removal characteristics of pharmaceuticals by analyzing the mass balance of unit processes in STPs using various treatment processes, such as CAS, anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O), membrane bioreactor (MBR), aerated lagoon, and oxidation ditch processes [14,[17][18][19][20]. However, the results of previous studies were not comprehensive.…”

“…The results demonstrated that 352 g of studied PPCPs entered into the WWTP daily while 14.5 g and 58.1 g left through effluent and sludge, respectively. Furthermore, 79.4% of PPCPs mass was lost in WWTP owing to transformation or degradation(Ashfaq et al, 2017).The study of micropollutants like PPCPs and their ozonated transformation products (TPs) was conducted in a municipal WWTP in Germany equipped with full-scale ozonation units. Samples were taken before and after ozonation and also after the biological treatment process. There was a decrease in the concentrations of parent compounds after ozonation and after biological posttreatment.…”
