“…Caffeine was also detected as being mostly attributed to coffee, tea, refreshments or products containing cocoa or chocolate, but also as a component of cold medicines, painkillers, and stimulants. The highest concentrations of caffeine were found in SP 1, SP 2 and FR 2 ( Figure 2 ) and surprisingly were within those reported in environmental waters worldwide [ 15 ], indicating that senior residences do not represent an extra source of caffeine compared to the general population. Caffeine is a marker of urban contamination but also has environmental impacts [ 16 ], indicating that its monitoring is well-justified.…”

“…The ubiquous presence of caffeine can be a strong indicator of water contamination by inadequately treated sewage (Li et al, 2020). High levels of caffeine associated with the presence of sanitary e uent have been found in inland and coastal waters in Brazil and in other parts of the world, suggesting that it can be used as a tracer of anthropogenic activity (Li et S3) probably because of the estuarine dispersion to the coastal area, in the absence of additional information to safely assess the real in uence of this compound in the aquatic environment, precaution is recommended regarding its effects of the aquatic biota (Korekar et al, 2020) thereafter a quantitative structure-activity relationship modelation, predicted the effect of both parental compounds and metabolites, based on their degradability and bioaccumulative proprieties, revealing that they could be toxic to the environment and human health (Wielens Becker et al, 2020). In almost all sampling points, the compounds detected more frequently and in greater quantity were caffeine, diclofenac and losartan, with the maximum values detected in the sampling points located on the north coast (P1: losartan and diclofenac) and centre-north (P3: caffeine and losartan).…”

“…In the latter study, 99% of study participants have detectable caffeine with a mean caffeine intake of 3.02 mg/kg/day. Although CAF consumption through diet has generally been considered safe to human health, recent studies with animal models and from human epidemiology suggest possible adverse influences on genetically susceptible populations (Cornelis et al 2006;Ding et al 2014;Findley et al 2019;Korekar et al 2019;Palatini et al 2009;Yang et al 2010;Zhou and Hypponen 2019).…”
