Abstract: Shudder occasionally occurs in the lock-up clutch of automatic transmissions when the frictional characteristics of the lock-up clutch have a negative slope with respect to the relative slip velocity. Torque converters are avital part of automatic transmission vehicles. In this paper the influence of a torque converter on the lowest mode of driveline vibrations (shuffle mode) is investigated. The automotive driveline is modelled by lumped parameter models, in which a steady-state torque converter model is inserted between the engine and the gearbox. A detailed mathematical model of a two-degree of freedom and a three-degree of freedom dynamic systemis given. The resulting nonlinear differential equations are linearized to obtain system transfer functions and to study damping characteristics of the torque converter.Additionally, a dynamic system model with nonlinear equations is developed in MATLAB/Simulink to verify the linearized system. The simulations show that the high frequency vibrations from the engine side are damped due to the torque converter and the linearized model predicts the system response accurately.

One of the challenges facing widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is their short driving range. To address this challenge, the development of various EV transmissions is underway. In transmissions, clutches are used for disconnection from the drive source, and a phenomenon called judder, which is a violent vibration, may occur when the clutch slides on a frictional surface. To resolve this problem, the use of deep reinforcement learning, which is being used and advanced in areas such as machine control in simulations, was focused upon. The purpose of this study is to suppress clutch judder using deep reinforcement learning. The deep reinforcement learning model was developed for seamless gear shift control, and the gearshift results without control were compared with the gearshift results after training. As a result, a control rule that achieves seamless gear shifting while suppressing the judder is designed by applying deep reinforcement learning to gear shifting control. In addition, seamless gear shifting can be achieved for various patterns of friction coefficients, enabling the development of a robust controller for changing the friction coefficients.

Torsional vibration problem is one of the major technical problems of the industrial rotating machinery, especially, geared rotor system such as automatic transmissions from the view point of the transient response. This study aims at evaluating the effect of an ideal inerter on reducing the transient torsional vibration of the system as a preliminary feasibility study. Both resonance and anti-resonance frequencies of the torsional vibration system with an ideal inerter are analytically derived from the governing equation of the system. Under the simplification assumptions of the system parameters, moment of inertia and torsional stiffness, the numerical simulations for evaluating resonance and anti-resonance frequencies are performed. As the result, we find out that the ideal inerter have some effects of regulating resonance and anti-resonance characteristics, for example, reducing resonance and anti-resonance frequencies, generating new anti-resonance, adjusting both number and frequency of antiresonance, and so on. These characteristics are depending on the system configurations, thus there are some resonance and antiresonance frequencies unaffected or less affected by the inerter. In conclusion, the ideal inerter has possibility of reducing the transient torsional vibration of the system by adjusting the resonance and anti-resonance characteristics under the suitable parameter settings of the torsional vibration system.
