Occurrence of Banana bunchy top virus in banana and plantain (Musa sp.) in Benin

Abstract: Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV; genus Babuvirus, family Nanoviridae), is one of the most serious pathogens of banana (AAA genome) and plantain (AAB genome) (Musa spp). BBTV is well established in central and southern sub-Saharan Africa (Kumar et al., 20011). It is transmitted by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa (Homoptera: Aphididae), in a persistent manner. In July 2011, banana and plantain that displayed stunting and leaf symptoms typical of banana bunchy top disease were observed to be widespread in… Show more

“…Banana bunchy top virus is one of the most damaging viruses on banana (Musa sp.) (Kumar et al, 2011) and it is expanding in Africa including Benin and Nigeria in West Africa (Kumar et al, 2011;Lokossou et al, 2012;Adegbola et al, 2013). However, unlike the other 4 banana viruses causing symptoms including mosaics that we indexed, Banana bunchy top disease has very characteristic symptoms on banana.…”

“…Banana is a major income and food security crop for poor smallholder farmers in Africa (Gassner et al., 2019; Marchal, 1990) and provides economic and social benefits for men and women in many rural areas of Africa (Akinyemi et al., 2010; Lokossou et al., 2012). Men and women play different roles in banana production (Ajambo et al., 2018) and have different opportunities and challenges in the banana production process.…”

“…Disease spread is constrained at higher altitudes (Niyongere et al ., 2013). BBTD was detected in Benin in 2012 with outbreak zones increasing throughout the southern half of the country since that time (Lokossou et al ., 2012). In each site, new fields were planted with BBTD‐free planting material, and infections seen were a result of natural BBTD infestations in the surrounding area.…”

“…Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) is one of the most significant threats to banana production in Africa today (Niyongere et al ., 2015). It is now reported in at least 16 countries in the continent, and affects about 6–12 million smallholders (Kumar et al ., 2011; Lokossou et al ., 2012; Jooste et al ., 2016). Both the banana bunchy top virus (BBTV; genus Babuvirus , Nanoviridae ) and its aphid vector Pentalonia nigronervosa (Homoptera; Aphididae) are so far known to only infest bananas, although a second vector P .…”
