Maternal social stress among breastfeeding women can be adapted in chronic process. However, neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying such adaptation remain to be identified. Here, we report the effects of 2 hr/day unfamiliar male rat invasion (UMI) stress on maternal behaviors in lactating rats during postpartum day 8 (UMI8) to postpartum day 12 (UMI12). Rat dams at UMI8 presented signs of maternal anxiety, depression, and attacks toward male intruder. These changes partially reversed at UMI12 except the sign of anxiety. In the supraoptic nucleus (SON), UMI12 but not UMI8 significantly increased the expression of c-Fos and phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2. At UMI8 but not UMI12, length of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP, astrocytic cytoskeletal element) filaments around oxytocin (OT) neurons was significantly longer than that of their controls; the amount of GFAP fragments at UMI12 was significantly less than that at UMI8. Expression of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS, enzyme for H2S synthesis) at UMI12 was significantly higher than that at UMI8. CBS expression did not change significantly in the somatic zone of the SON but decreased significantly at the ventral glia lamina at UMI8. In brain slices of the SON, aminooxyacetate (a CBS blocker) significantly increased the expression of GFAP proteins that were molecularly associated with CBS. Aminooxyacetate also reduced the firing rate of OT neurons whereas Na2S, a donor of H2S, increased it. The adaptation during chronic social stress is possibly attributable to the increased production of H2S by astrocytes and the subsequent retraction of astrocytic processes around OT neurons.

Background: Breast-feeding is considered a global standard. Certainly special strategies have an important role in mother’s success in exclusive feeding of the neonate and preservation of the mother’s health. Healthy lifestyle in mothers can be one of the most effective measures to achieve this success. Unfortunately, due to the great attention to the growth and nutrition of the child in the first year of birth, mother's life style is neglected during lactation. Considering the widespread acceptance and interest in complementary medicine, it seems logical to search in Persian Medicine documents to find a guideline regarding the proposed issue. In Persian Traditional Medicine, a lot of attention has been paid to the lifestyle for all lifetimes, including lactation. In the present study, the views of Avicenna -renowned Iranian scientist- were discussed about the life style of mothers during lactation. Material and Methods: In this study, Al-Qanun fi al-tibb by Avicenna (11th) and for thorough discussion also reviewed the views of a later Iranian scientist, Kholase al-hekma by Mohammad Hossein Aghili Alavi Khorasani (18th) were studied to collect all of information about life style of mothers during lactation. Furthermore, a search in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Sid, Iran doc was done to get related data about this field from 1990-Jan-1 to 2018-Dec-30. Conclusion: Healthy lifestyle during lactation has six main axes. These six axes include air, nutrition, physical activity and massage, sleep and wakefulness, evacuation of harmful substances and maintaining essential ingredients, and psychic movement and repose. In order to the mother would be able to produce adequate milk for the infant and her health would be preserved.

ResumoObjetivo: O pós-parto é um período de alterações biológicas, psicológicas e sociais. Essa é considerada a época mais vulnerável para a ocorrência de transtornos psiquiátricos. A disforia puerperal, a depressão pós-parto e a psicose pós-parto têm sido classicamente relacionadas ao pós-parto. Atualmente, tem sido observado que os transtornos ansiosos também estão associados a esse período. Método: Neste artigo é feita uma revisão da bibliografia acerca de transtornos psiquiátricos no pós-parto a partir de artigos encontrados no PubMed e no SciELO entre os anos de 2000 e 2009. Livros, teses e outros artigos considerados relevantes citados no material consultado também foram incluídos. Resultados: A disforia puerperal ocorre em 50% a 85% das mulheres, o quadro é leve e transitório e não requer tratamento. A depressão pós-parto tem prevalência em torno de 13%, pode causar repercussões negativas na interação mãe-bebê e em outros aspectos da vida da mulher e deve ser tratada. A psicose pós-parto é rara, aparecendo em cerca de 0,2% das puérperas. Tem quadro grave que envolve sintomas psicóticos e afetivos, havendo risco de suicídio e infanticídio e geralmente requerendo internação hospitalar. Os transtornos ansiosos podem ser exacerbados ou precipitados no pós-parto, especialmente o transtorno de ansiedade generalizada, o transtorno de estresse pós-traumático e o transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo. Puerperal blues, postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis have been classically associated to the postpartum. Anxiety disorders have also recently been associated to this period. Method: The present article reports a review of the literature on postpartum psychiatric disorders based on articles found on the PubMed and SciELO databases, published between 2000 and 2009. Relevant books, theses and other articles cited in the articles found were also included in this review. Results: Puerperal dysphoria occurs in 50% to 85% of women following childbirth and is typically mild and transient in nature and requires no treatment.
