Odontogenic keratocyst arising in the maxillary sinus: A rare case report

Abstract: Odontogenic keratocyst is an aggressive cystic lesion and a common type of tooth derived cyst due to presence of odontogenic epithelial remnants in different regions of jaw. In majority of cases, it is located in mandibular posterior region. But it can also be found in the maxilla especially in the canine region. We present a rare case of OKC in maxillary sinus which associated with ectopic third molar. Also, it can be easily confused with other lesions of maxillary sinus like sinusitis or antral polyps, which… Show more

“…In mandible, the highest frequency occurs in the body of the mandible (20%) followed by the angle of the mandible (18%) and vertical ramus (10%), but in the maxilla, it is seen most commonly in the canine area, followed by third molar tuberosity and anterior maxilla. 2,3 Maxillary sinus pathology can occur when the Schneiderian membrane is breached by conditions such as the odontogenic pathology of the maxillary bone. Odontogenic infections and pathology account for 11%-12% cases of maxillary sinusitis.…”

“…1 Involvement of the maxillary sinus by OKC is rare with <1% of cases reported in the literature. 3 The maxillary sinus is a part of the paranasal sinuses, in proximity with developing tooth and root apices of premolar and molars. It is vulnerable to odontogenic infection, cyst and tumors of odontogenic origin.…”

“…Odontogenic lesions of the maxillary sinus are scarce in literature limited mostly to case reports or series. (4,5,6) Most studies investigated the prevalence and distribution of those lesions in both jaws, no study was found to focus entirely on the maxilla and data.…”
