Odontome, cyst, impacted tooth, and space infection in a single patient: All-in-one diagnostic dilemma

Abstract: This case report analyzes the clinical and radiographic features of odontogenic infection with underlying pathology. Systematic approach leads to narrow the differential diagnosis on the basis of exclusion. This results in correct diagnosis, proper treatment, and avoiding unnecessary treatment. This case report highlighted an unusual case of odontogenic infection involving adjacent fascial spaces with underlying pathology which was mimicking a cyst, tumor, and odontome. Systematic approach helped us achieve ac… Show more

“…[6] They are frequently associated with disturbance in tooth eruption, which results in impacted permanent teeth and sometimes it may appear as an expansion of bone, pain, and displacement of the adjacent tooth. [9,10] However, in this case report, tooth 21 managed to erupt even though multiple compound odontomas were forming in close relation to its root.…”

“…Odontomas are asymptomatic and can occur at any age in any areas of the maxillary or mandibular arch and are accidentally discovered by routine radiographic examination. They can lead to buccal, superficial temporal, or submassetric space infection, leading to a diagnostic dilemma [ 12 ]. Odontomas need surgical removal if it causes uneruption or deflection of the teeth, devitalization of the tooth that is near its vicinity, or swelling near the affected tooth due to infection.…”

“…Odontomas need surgical removal if it causes uneruption or deflection of the teeth, devitalization of the tooth that is near its vicinity, or swelling near the affected tooth due to infection. Odontomas do not cause infection themselves but are associated with infections such as an abscess or can undergo cystic degeneration such as the occurrence of dentigerous cysts [ 12 ].…”
