Odorant Binding Proteins of the Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta: An Example of the Problems Facing the Analysis of Widely Divergent Proteins

Abstract: We describe the odorant binding proteins (OBPs) of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, obtained from analyses of an EST library and separate 454 sequencing runs of two normalized cDNA libraries. We identified a total of 18 putative functional OBPs in this ant. A third of the fire ant OBPs are orthologs to honey bee OBPs. Another third of the OBPs belong to a lineage-specific expansion, which is a common feature of insect OBP evolution. Like other OBPs, the different fire ant OBPs share little sequen… Show more

“…In contrast to previous hypotheses [17, 18], it is primarily a conserved subset of single-copy orthologs which are expressed in ant antennae. In Cerapachys biroi , only one dynamically evolving CSP is expressed specifically in antennae, in contrast to five conserved OBPs and two conserved CSPs showing antenna-specific expression.…”

“…Similarly, jewel wasps have 90 OBPs, while honeybees (with 21) and fire ants (with 18) have far fewer [30], and fig wasps have just seven. The contrast with other herbivorous insects is also striking.…”

“…CSPs (17,18). Because ants detect a large variety of chemicals derived from their habitats by chemosensory receptors, they require unidentified carrier protein(s) with a flexible structure that can bind various semiochemicals with moderate selectivity.…”
